Hi my name is Janet Dougherty
My name is Janet Dougherty. I was born and raised in New Zealand (NZ). My career background is nursing, business and travel. I trained as an RN in Auckland New Zealand and qualified as a midwife in Newcastle Australia. I was fortunate to study in Australia where I completed my Business Degree and I call Australia home, nearly as much as I call NZ home. I love living in both countries.
Early in my Nursing career I had the opportunity to work in the East Sepik Province of Papa New Guinea (PNG) managing a labour and malnutrition ward so babies and children were in abundance and I loved it. The work also required I cover a large land mass across the East Sepik terrain to provide an immunisation program for neonates through to 12 years of age, plus pre-natal checks for pregnant mothers to be. Here I obtained a love for flying and 4 wheel driving. The distances were long and those that could not be reached by air or wheel we walked.
When I left PNG I wanted to work in as an exciting role I was able to secure a great job s a Flight Nurse with Air Ambulance in NSW Australia. Travel has been a major part of my career life. I followed a man to Adelaide Australia where I studied my business degree. The romance did not last and I was free to move away and entered into sales and marketing in the medical world which eventually led me back to NZ where I opened an office for an American Company wanting a presence in NZ. This led me to want to start my own company and of course this is in health where we currently co-ordinate healthcare and support for clients who choose to travel to NZ for treatment and recovery `NUAZ Limited’.
So how did I get to be interested in health and lifestyle coaching Like for everyone of us, life never stands still and change abounds. We all have a story or two to tell. In 2008 my life partner went missing at sea and was found two days before Christmas after being shipwrecked. A traumatic time in both our lives and he is whole and well and back with me. The best Christmas present one could have is your partner arriving home on Christmas day alive and well after being presumed lost at sea. What that did for me was amazing. Within 7 days of Rewi returning home I lost the power to turn my head, and my back was stiff and inflexible and the pain on a scale of 1 to 10 was an 8+. My life was about to change and I started a journey in self development. A self discovery which involved Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnosis training with work on myself and then the gift of becoming a Master NLP Practitioner to be able to work with others.
Today I have a medical condition labelled psoriatic arthritis I have extremely great days and some not so good days. It used to rule my life and now it is a piece of my pie that I live and work with and learn so much from. Pain tells a story and it will stay there until the mind gets the message the body is giving it. There was a time I could not walk unaided, could not drive, my hands hurt so much I could not hold the steering wheel and I needed assistance to get in the car. To turn over in bed was painful and that was a 10. My partner was/is amazing. He nursed me lovingly and patiently and if you know him this is not his normal demeanour. Rewi is a go get it and do it type so slowing down to be with me was/is very generous. The learning for me was to go from I have an disease and this is all I have of life, to I have a full life plus a bonus of having an illness. Yes that took some re-framing and the effect on me has been” positively immense”. I used to hide from people, that I was struggling as I was embarrassed like it was all my fault that I was not 100% fit and well. Now I share it so people get it, not for sympathy but for understanding on the days when I am slow moving. The gifts include my being able to appreciate what others go through when unwell and the biggest personal learning is the knowing that the simplicity of changing my thinking at the subconscious level impacts my outcomes and achievements no matter what is occurring around me.
I love to work with people who have an illness that all consumes them so that they too get the opportunity to live life and have the health issue realised as a bonus This may appear so far removed from where you are now and that is perfectly natural. All you have to believe is that it is possible and we can work together. On the flip side I love to work with the family and loved ones who have an important person in their life with an illness. So many times a child, a partner goes through guilt unnecessarily when their loved family member or friend is sick. You may be frightened to go play outside with friends because you think you should be home in case you are needed or not present when the unwell person deteriorates, you may stay home being miserable and resentful and then guilty because you feel that way, when really you too have a life to live. I work with you so you get the power and joy of being 100% present with the unwell person and 100% present with living your life at the same time.
Being a Coach and Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnosis I use Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis (with your permission) to instil life changing behaviours so that you are successful in achieving your goals and having the mindset of a champion, no matter from where you are now.
